Gallery Assistant (MUCEP Program)
Grenfell Art Gallery is hiring Gallery Assistants for the Fall and Winter 2019/20 Academic year through Memorial's Undergraduate Career Experience Program (MUCEP).
Grenfell Art Gallery is a public art gallery located on the Grenfell Campus of Memorial University in the city of Corner Brook on the picturesque coast of Western Newfoundland. As Memorial University's art gallery and the only gallery in Newfoundland and Labrador focused solely on the visual arts, Grenfell Art Gallery cultivates a generative engagement with art and art history through a year-round program of exhibitions and outreach activities that are accessible, relevant, and experimental. As an educational resource for the Visual Arts Program, Grenfell Campus, Memorial University and the public gallery for Corner Brook and the Western Newfoundland region the gallery engages in collaborative partnerships with like-minded local, regional, national and international artists, organizations and institutions.
The Gallery Assistant will assist with all Grenfell Art Gallery programs, the care and stewardship of the Memorial University Art Collection, preparation of exhibitions including installation and de-installation, collections management including condition reporting and art handling, gallery marketing, and publishing activities.
Under the supervision of Gallery Director execute effective marketing/communications of events, programs and public engagement activities. Support gallery operations as it relates to exhibition activity, focusing on in-gallery experience of Grenfell Art Gallery publics and activating exhibitions and collections as a public educational resource.
Organized, strong work ethic coupled with excellent interpersonal skills, initiative and attention to detail. Familiarity with working with the public, effective writing and verbal skills is an asset. Interests in contemporary art, program development and education, material culture and preservation, and communications.
Experience using various social media platforms, Microsoft Office applications on a PC/Mac platform, and familiarity with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
Career goals supported include: museum and art gallery work generally, curator, critic, curatorial assistant and art educator.
Hours of work: Variable, 4-5 hour shifts with some weekends and evenings.

To be eligible for a MUCEP position, a student must:
-Be a full-time undergraduate student.
-Be registered in at least three credit courses
-Have a 60% or above cumulative average or a 60% or above average in the last ten courses or may have an average below 60%, and applying with support through the Blundon Centre in accordance with the Accessibility for Students with Disabilities policy. (First year students have attained a 60% cumulative average because of the admission average.)
-Not work more than 80 MUCEP hours in a semester, or 80 hours of combined MUCEP and ISWEP positions.
-Not be on a work term during the semester in which the MUCEP application is submitted.
