A Grenfell Campus graduate student has been selected as a delegate with the United Nation's Commission on the Status of Women.
Paige Percy, who hails from Toledo, Ontario, is pursuing a Master of Arts in Environmental Policy at Memorial University's Corner Brook campus. She is one of four delegates chosen by the Young Diplomats of Canada (YDC) to attend in the Spring of 2022 and will take on the role of diversity and engagement co-ordinator.
The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is a functional commission of the United Nations Economic and Social Council, one of the main bodies within the United Nations.
The commission is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women.
The Young Diplomats of Canada is a youth-led non-profit organization that aims to amplify Canadian youth voices at the global stage by bringing together Canada's next generation of policy makers and global leaders. Their goal is to normalize meaningful youth engagement at the highest of diplomacy and decision making.
"I'm excited that this opportunity will allow for me to explore and learn more about the intersections of gender equality and environmental issues from topic experts, activists, and global leaders. Representing Canadian youth on topics I am so passionate about is an honour. I am looking forward to being able to share what I learn and experience during CSW66 with the wider community at Memorial and with other Canadian youth," Percy said.
Ms. Percy's current thesis research explores rural/urban public space activism, agrarian actors, and populism. More broadly, her research interests are gender, the environment, contextual community policy, and the conceptualization of policy topics.
In addition to her research and work with the Young Diplomats of Canada, Paige is an active community member and volunteer for a variety of causes. She is the President of the Grenfell Graduate Student Society, a Youth Ambassador for Plan International Canada, and a youth member of Alliance Canada Hong Kong.
