50th Anniversary

1980s

  • 1981: in response to the need for more registered nurses, further renovations occurred at the school, more instructors were hired and enrollment was increased to 90 students in first year.
  • 1982: 40 students graduated from the newly established 30 month program, reporting 100% pass on the registration (RN) exam for the first time.
  • 1982: Canadian Nurses Association accepts motion that by 2000, all nurses entering the workforce would have a baccalaureate degree in nursing. Work began on a developing a new baccalaureate program.
  • 1984: the school instituted a formal Preceptorship Program – the first of such program in the province. The preceptorship was implemented to help each transition from student to graduate nurse.
  • 1987: Linda Norman-Robbins was appointed director
  • Late 1980s: university credit courses in psychology, sociology and philosophy were added to the curriculum.
