Major in Environmental Science
The Bachelor of Science (Environmental Science) is offered only at the Grenfell Campus. Students enrolled in this degree program are required to complete 120 credit-hours, usually over a four-year course of study. The degree offers two streams, biology and chemistry and can be completed as either a general degree or an honours degree.
Students in each stream who are in either the general or honours degree program take courses in basic biology, chemistry, earth science, physics, math and statistics at the start of their program, then take more specialized courses that could include ecology, atmospheric chemistry, oceanography, environmental restoration, global environmental change, and soil systems. Senior courses include an environmental seminar and a one-semester research project (general degree) or a two-semester independent project (honours degree).

Honours in Environmental Science
Students in the Honours Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science must complete all requirements for the Major in Environmental Science as well as:
- complete 3 additional credit hours in courses at the 4000 level, normally drawn from ENVS 4069, 4131, 4133, 4369, 4479 and ENSU 4201.
- undertake a two-semester long research project consisting of a literature review and research proposal (ENVS 4951) and a research project course and an honours dissertation (ENVS 4959)
Students are advised to consult the Grenfell section of the Memorial University Academic Calendar for detailed program requirements (https://www.mun.ca/regoff/calendar/sectionNo=SWGC-0000).
Core Program Requirements
All students enrolled in either the Major or the Honours degree program must complete the following 24 credit hours to meet the School of Science and the Environment Core Program Requirements: :
- One of:
- 6 credit hours in English courses;
- 3 credit hours in English and 3 credit hours in another language;
- 6 credit hours in Critical Reading and Writing (CRW) courses, including at least 3 credit hours in English courses.
- 6 credit hours in Mathematics or Statistics courses;
- 6 credit hours in courses chosen from: Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science, Ocean Sciences or Physics;
- 6 credit hours in courses chosen from: Economics, Environment and Sustainability, Geography or Political Science.
The same course cannot be used to meet more than one of the requirements listed above.
Critical Reading and Writing (CRW) courses are regulated by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, St. John's Campus. Eligible CRW courses are indicated under Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Course Descriptions.
