Welcome to the Aging Research Centre - Newfoundland and Labrador!
When I came home to Corner Brook to join the Grenfell Campus of Memorial University in 2015, it was with the hope that my expertise in dementia would allow me to support the development of a research centre focused on the study of aging. That became a reality in December 11, 2018 through a partnership between the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and Memorial University and I am thrilled to serve as ARC-NL’s inaugural director.
In Newfoundland and Labrador we have a rapidly aging population. As such, it is important that we have aging-related research that will help us understand the issues and challenges facing our older adults. Through ARC-NL we will promote and support research focused on late life issues that will benefit the people of this province. While there has been aging-related research ongoing in Newfoundland and Labrador, it is our role to raise awareness of the work being done and bring together those experienced
researchers to foster collaboration and increase the amount of research taking place. We also want to nurture the next generation of researchers by encouraging
students to pursue the study of aging.
To support that work we will attract and manage financial contributions from both the public sector and private donors to offer
funding opportunities to researchers, post-doctoral fellows, and students. We will add to our efforts by linking researchers in this province with teams and programs in other jurisdictions.
We also want that research to be meaningful to the people of this province and to share that research through knowledge translation and mobilization. We are working to accomplish that through engagement with our community including older adults, their family members and key organizations with a focus on aging. Our
Advisory Council supports and helps us do that.
You will see on our website that there is the opportunity for you to become a member of ARC-NL. I encourage you to do so either as a
community member. You will see we also have a participant pool. This is a list of individuals who have volunteered to participate in research. I encourage you to review the information and be a part of the research focused on aging.
I am excited about the future of ARC-NL and the discoveries that our members will make. Our Core Leadership Team are working to ensure this pilot project will become a permanent research centre of Memorial University by 2023. Please feel free to contact me or our
co-ordinator with your feedback and suggestions. I welcome your input as we help ARC-NL grow from its current state of infancy to, what I hope will be, an extremely fulfilling age of maturity.
