Melissa Halford – Program Coordinator

Melissa is from Newfoundland and has lived, worked and studied in Nova Scotia, South Korea and the United States. She holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Francis Xavier University and a Masters degree from Memorial University. All of Melissa's spare time is spent with her wonderful husband and their two outstanding children. Together, they enjoy playing pretend, making noise and telling stories


Natalie Penney-Toba – Instructor

Natalie is from the Corner Brook area. She lived in Japan for more than 15 years. Natalie holds a Master's degree TESOL from Columbia University in New York. She also holds a Bachelor's of Education and Bachelor of Arts from Memorial University. She has 15 years ESL teaching experiences at universities, public schools and language schools in Japan and Canada. She has enjoyed travelling to many countries in Asia and Europe. She hopes to continue travelling while enjoying many outdoor activities.


Nicole Bailey – Instructor

Nicole was born in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL. She graduated from Memorial University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Education. Nicole is currently working towards completing her Masters of Education in Curriculum Studies with a focus in Language and Literacy. She has gained valuable teaching experience here in NL over the past number of years, as well as taught in Melbourne, Australia in 2013. In 2014, Nicole moved to Medellin, Colombia where she taught English as a Second Language at a post-secondary institute. This experience created a desire to teach ESL in her own province, which has led her here to Grenfell Campus. She began teaching with the ESL program in the 2016 winter semester. Nicole enjoys traveling, as well as the many outdoor activities that the west coast of NL has to offer.


Tom Halford - Instructor

Tom is from Saint John, New Brunswick. He has lived and worked in Canada, the United States, and South Korea. His most recent work experience was as the Assistant Director/Writing Specialist at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. As a recent PhD graduate in English from Memorial University of Newfoundland, he hopes to bring this training to the classroom, but the best part about teaching, for Tom, is learning from his students. When he is not teaching, he spends his time playing with his super smart, tremendously fun kids and his lovely wife.


Thomas Young - Instructional Assistant

Thomas is a graduate of the Historical Studies program at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University. He has been actively involved in the Intensive English Programs and Culture to Community Program at Grenfell Campus for several years. In his spare time, Thomas enjoys playing video games, listening to music, and travelling.



Santiago Guzman – Discussion Leader

Hello! My name is Santiago Guzmán and I am an international student from Mexico here at Memorial University, Grenfell Campus. I am currently a second year theatre student thrilled get to know more about my craft and share my own experience. My hobbies include baking, cooking, and singing in the shower. I cannot wait to meet you all!



Daniel Burton – Discussion Leader

Hey there, I'm Daniel Burton. Born and raised in Newfoundland, I enjoy travel and have spent some time tutoring in Cairo, Egypt. I'm studying Psychology, and my hobbies include video games, board games, the outdoors, and cartoons.




Carolee Martinez – Discussion Session Supervisor

Hello Everyone! My name is Carolee Martinez but you can call me Car. It's much easier for a lot of people and I prefer it! I am currently studying Psychology to be a clinical neuropsychologist in the future. I am excited to learn from you about your culture and other cool things about you. If you ever see me in the hallways, don't be shy to say hi or ask for assistance!



Jiayin Qi – Discussion Leader

Hello guys, I am Jiayin Qi, and you can call me Katherine. I am from China. Currently, I am doing my Business degree at Grenfell, and this year is my third year. I love animals, especially cats, dogs, and rabbits, and I love travelling with family and friends. 



Nieve Grady – Recreation Leader

My name is Nieve and I'm from the lovely town of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia! I'm a second year nursing student here at Grenfell. I love the outdoors, cooking, and watching movies!





Bethany Bernier – Tutorial Leader

Bethany is in her fourth year of studies, majoring in Psychology with a minor in Social Cultural Studies. In the future, she hopes to attend a Masters program in Public Policy and Administration, focusing on Indigenous communities. In her spare time, she hosts Psychology Society meetings and attends various cultural events. As a stress reliever Bethany enjoys running and spending time with friends.



Megan Trotman – Tutorial Leader

Hi there, my name is Megan Trotman and I come from the warm Caribbean island of Barbados. I am in my fourth year of an Environmental Biology degree at Grenfell campus. I am friendly and positive individual who enjoys learning about new cultures and customs. 




Valerie Rohan – Discussion Leader

Hey! I'm Valérie from Mauritius island. I moved to Canada to study Environmental Science and I'm now in my second year. I really enjoy meeting people from different countries and learning about new cultures. I am looking forward to meeting you all!







Yu Ru Lee – Discussion Leader

Hello, my name is Yu Ru Lee, I originally come from Taiwan, but Canada has already become my second home. I started my university life at Grenfell in 2015, and this is my third year. My major is environmental science biology. I am a very outgoing person. I will read, watch movies, write stories, and make friends during my free time. 




Johnathan Lander – Discussion Leader

Johnathan Lander is a Bachelor of Business Administration student at Grenfell Campus. He is an active member of student life on campus and currently works as a Residence Assistant with Grenfell Campus Student Housing. He has a passion for people and you will often see him at Brewed Awakening, our local coffee shop, either working or chatting. Johnathan is a member of ENACTUS Grenfell, the Grenfell Mentors program, and a musician in his church. In his spare time he enjoys photography, reading, playing music, and drinking coffee.



Maisha Shaheed – Discussion Leader

Hello! I am Maisha and I am a third-year international student from Bangladesh. I am studying Environmental Science, majoring in Biology and minoring in Economics. I hope to be an environmental lawyer or consultant in the future. My hobbies include travelling, swimming, and exploring the trails of Corner Brook. I love eating outside and trying out new restaurants. 




Michelle Greenham – Discussion Leader

My name is Michelle Greenham and I am in my fourth year as a BBA student here at Grenfell. I am also working on a minor in Environmental Studies. I grew up in Ontario, Canada and moved to Newfoundland five years ago. I am an animal lover and a movie buff and I enjoy crocheting. Most of my friends here at Grenfell are international students and I very much enjoy learning about their cultures and sharing Canadian culture with them. I look forward to hearing what you have to say in our discussions each week!



Sarah Levita – Discussion Leader

Sarah was born in Toronto, but has lived in the Corner Brook area for over 10 years. She is currently in her fourth year of studies, majoring in English Literature. She hopes to be a professor someday, teaching English as well as to become a published author. Her hobbies include travelling Europe, writing, music, cooking, and volunteering with animals.
